Terra Luna Herbals • Elise Hanks

Plastic microbeads.  Parabens.  Triclosan.  What do all these technical-sounding words have in common?  For starters, they're probably in your medicine cabinet, shower and makeup bag.  They're also all dangerous to the environment, wildlife - and you.

In response to a market where "good" options are few and far between, people are re-embracing a staple of households before the advent of chemical-based beauty products - the medicinal garden.  Medicinal gardens WERE the medicine cabinet of days past, and were just as essential as vegetable gardens and staple crops.

A medicinal garden is not a possibility for most people - especially if you live in a city.  Fortunately, pioneers like Elise at Terra Luna Herbals are bridging the gap, bringing the benefits of medicinal gardens to us city dwellers here in Philadelphia (and across the country!)  Her products speak for themselves - and they're made from ingredients you can actually pronounce, like calendula, angelica root, and lavender.

Moreover, they work.  When I started using Elise's products - especially her New Dawn Skin Salve and Skin Serene Oil - the issues I'd had with my skin that I'd always assumed were caused by stress disappeared.  I also feel better supporting someone local whose values - rather than shareholders - dictate how she runs her business.

What’s the story behind where you are today?

My Terra Luna story started when I graduated college and came to the realization that he industry I had intended to enter (fashion) was really not for me. On a whim, my dear friend, who was experiencing similar misgivings, set off on a trip to volunteer on some vegetable farms in Colorado and Arizona. After experiencing organic farm life, we were hooked! When  returned to Philadelphia, I got an apprenticeship on a flower farm and began taking herbalism classes. The rest naturally came into place.

What’s your Why?

My garden!

What’s on the list for today? What’s next?

Growing my business to the point where I can expand to a larger plot of land to grow on. The goal is always to connect client with what the natural world has to offer - expanding my base is always on my mind.

What’s one thing that you’d like people to know?

Using herbs and plants in general for medicine, both physical and mental is such a gift - it’s all there for us, growing from the Earth! We just have to change our habits and empower ourselves to take control of our own health. Start with herbal tea!
